Second World War Posters

Geoff Henckel recently gave members a reminder of the war effort in the UK through a presentation displaying Second War Posters. They are accessible through the Imperial War Museum website

Interestingly some of the messages on the posters – stay safe, make do and mend, eat in moderation to preserve food supply – still resonate to some extent today during the Covid19 lockdown. Thankfully, however, there is no need to recycle bones to make glue or fertilizer!

Geoff highlighted particularly the contribution of Abram Games, a British graphic designer, who served as the ‘Official War Poster Artist’ during the Second World War. Geoff’s presentation actually includes Games’s famous ‘Join the ATS’ poster of 1941 – the “blonde bombshell” recruitment poster.
